Does the above proposed Wellington West condo design “wow” you? This is what the Ottawa planning committee has been debating.
Last year, the committee rejected a proposal from Mizrahi Developments for a 12-storey condominium at the corner of Wellington Street West and Island Park Drive on account of it being three storeys too tall. After appealing to the Ontario Municipal Board, Mizrahi was given two options: scale down to nine storeys, or design a landmark building with a “wow” factor.
But how does one define “wow”?
The Ottawa Citizen reports that after much debate, the Ottawa planning committee voted 8-2 in favour of approval, deeming the project “landmark” enough to allow it to bypass zoning requirements. Kitchissippi Councillor Jeff Leiper stood firm in his opposition to the project, saying, “I have talked to so many of my residents over the course of the past three weeks and I am absolutely convinced that the mainstream majority opinion in Kitchissippi is that this new building is completely out of character for our neighbourhood.”
From here, city council has to uphold the decision, and if they do, the Ontario Municipal Board will make its ruling in early November.
What do you think? Does this design have enough “wow” factor for you?
